Can You Drink Tap Water in Libya?

Tap water in Libya is not safe to drink for visitors. Years of civil conflict following the 2011 revolution have severely damaged water infrastructure across the country. The Great Man-Made River project, one of the world's largest irrigation and water supply systems, has been repeatedly damaged and its maintenance severely disrupted. Even in Tripoli, the water reaching taps is not reliably safe for consumption.

Tripoli, the capital in the northwest, is where most visitors — primarily business travellers and journalists — spend time. The city's water supply is treated but infrastructure damage and supply interruptions mean quality at the tap is unreliable. Hotels in the business districts provide bottled or filtered water for guests. Bottled water is available in supermarkets and shops when supply chains are functioning.

Benghazi in the east, long a centre of conflict, has even more compromised water infrastructure. The city's water treatment systems have sustained significant damage from fighting. Use bottled water exclusively in Benghazi and confirm supply with your accommodation before arrival.

Libya's ancient Roman ruins — Leptis Magna, Sabratha, and Cyrene — are among the most spectacular in the world and attract a small but growing number of heritage travellers. These sites are in areas with essentially no reliable water infrastructure for visitors. Any travel to archaeological sites requires carrying all water from urban centres.

Libya's security situation remains unpredictable and most governments advise against all travel or all but essential travel. For any visitor, use sealed bottled water exclusively and carry a filter and purification tablets as backup. Water planning is secondary to security planning in Libya.
