How We Research
We don't conduct independent water testing. We summarise and interpret publicly available official data. Conditions can change rapidly — always verify with local authorities before travelling.
Our guides are researched using publicly available information from government health departments, local water authorities, tourism organisations and other reputable sources where available. Because water quality can change over time, our content is reviewed and updated regularly to reflect the latest information.
Where our data comes from
Every rating is built from official government and international health data — never crowdsourced, never guessed.
World Health Organization
Global drinking water quality guidelines and country-level sanitation assessments.
US Centers for Disease Control
Traveller health advisories and water safety notices for international destinations.
National health ministries
Official reports from each country's local water authority and public health department.
City & regional water suppliers
Published water quality reports and treatment standards direct from municipal water providers, where publicly available.
Foreign affairs & travel warnings
Supplementary water safety notes from government travel departments including FCDO, DFAT, and State Department.
Why We Started This Site

Can I Drink the Tap Water started as an idea between Robert T. and Pat G., two passionate Australian travellers who wanted to make it easier for people to find reliable information about drinking tap water around the world.
Robert is a web developer and avid traveller responsible for building and managing the website, combining his technical expertise with a passion for creating accessible travel resources.
Pat brings years of experience working in Australia's water and environmental sector, contributing his knowledge through content writing, research and editorial review.
As the project grew, we welcomed Viany to the team, whose professional background in water quality testing helps us research, review and interpret official drinking water information from around the world.
Together, we combine our passion for travel with careful research to create clear, practical and trustworthy information that helps travellers make informed decisions wherever they go.
We contribute in a personal capacity. The views and information published on this website are independent and do not represent the views of any current or former employer or organisation.
