Can You Drink Tap Water in Central African Republic?

Tap water in the Central African Republic (CAR) is not safe to drink for visitors. Ongoing armed conflict involving multiple armed groups has devastated infrastructure across the country, and water treatment systems are essentially non-functional outside of some areas of Bangui. CAR consistently ranks among the world's least developed countries with some of the lowest rates of access to clean water.

Bangui, the capital on the Ubangi River at the border with DR Congo, is where virtually all visitors — primarily aid workers, UN personnel, and journalists — spend their time. The city's water infrastructure is severely limited and intermittent. Hotels and NGO compounds manage their own water supply independently. Bottled water is available in the capital when supply chains are functioning. The Ubangi River is not safe to drink without comprehensive treatment.

Beyond Bangui, travel in CAR is extremely dangerous. Armed groups control large portions of the country, road travel outside the capital is essentially impossible without armed escorts, and most areas have no functioning infrastructure of any kind. The Dzanga-Sangha protected area in the southwest — one of Africa's great rainforest wildlife destinations, famous for forest elephants and western lowland gorillas at the Dzanga Bai clearing — is managed with support from WWF and has established safety protocols for visitors. Water is managed by the conservation operators for guided groups.

CAR is one of the world's most dangerous and logistically complex destinations. Any visit, including to Dzanga-Sangha, requires working through established organisations with security expertise. Water management is one component of the comprehensive operational planning required for any visit.

Use sealed bottled water in Bangui when available. Carry a quality filter and purification tablets as essential backup. All water planning must be integrated with security planning through experienced operators for any trip to CAR.
