Countries Where Boiling is Recommended
Boiling tap water is strongly recommended in these countries as water treatment is inconsistent or infrastructure issues compromise water quality. While municipal water may be treated, contamination often occurs during distribution through aging pipes, storage tanks, or intermittent supply.
Many local residents boil water before drinking as a standard practice. Boiling for at least one minute at a rolling boil kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may be present in tap water. This is the most reliable method to make tap water safe when bottled water isn't available.
Water quality varies by location within these countries - some areas have better infrastructure than others. Hotels in tourist areas may have filtration systems, but it's safer to verify before drinking tap water. Boiling is particularly important in rural areas, older buildings, and during rainy seasons when water systems can be overwhelmed.
For short visits, bottled water is more convenient and widely available. For longer stays or situations where bottled water isn't accessible, boiling tap water properly makes it safe for drinking, brushing teeth, and food preparation.
