Can You Drink Tap Water in India?

Tap water in India is unsafe for drinking in virtually all areas, including major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. While water treatment plants exist, the distribution infrastructure is severely compromised by leaking pipes, illegal connections, contamination from sewage, and irregular water supply. Indian residents rarely drink tap water directly; most use filtered water, boiled water, or bottled water. Tourists should never drink tap water anywhere in India under any circumstances. Water quality varies dramatically even within the same city, and waterborne diseases are extremely common.

The intermittent water supply (water is often available only a few hours per day) increases contamination risk as pipes may fill with polluted groundwater when pressure drops. Use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, and making ice. Tap water should only be used for bathing and washing hands. Even in luxury hotels, verify water source before drinking. Many hotels provide complimentary bottled water and have water purifiers.

Restaurants may serve filtered water but tourists should request bottled water to be safe. Common waterborne illnesses in India include traveler's diarrhea (extremely common), typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A and E, dysentery, and various parasitic infections. Contamination is worse during monsoon season when flooding overwhelms sewage systems.
