Can You Drink Tap Water in Hoi An?

Tap water in Hoi An is not safe to drink. Vietnam's municipal water supply varies significantly by region and city, and while treatment infrastructure has improved in major urban centres, Hoi An's supply — a smaller city in Quang Nam province — is not treated to a standard suitable for direct consumption by visitors. The water may contain bacteria, sediment, residual agricultural chemicals from the surrounding Thu Bon River basin, and other contaminants that can cause gastrointestinal illness in those not accustomed to the local microbiome.

Many establishments also have water refill stations or filtered water dispensers that guests can use with reusable bottles, which is a positive development for reducing single-use plastic in this UNESCO World Heritage destination.

Visitors should use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth. Ice in restaurants and cafes in Hoi An's Ancient Town is generally considered safe at established venues, as reputable restaurants use filtered or boiled water to make ice. Ice from unknown sources or street vendors should be treated with more caution. Be mindful of fresh fruit juices, which may be diluted with tap water at some venues.

The practical approach in Hoi An is to drink the water provided by your accommodation, carry a reusable bottle and refill it at filtered water stations where available, and use bottled water as a backup. This keeps you hydrated comfortably, reduces plastic waste, and costs very little even if you rely entirely on purchased bottled water throughout your stay.
